Dark Master Escape Rooms had received some glowing reports, so we were keen to try them out. We chose to tackle their OneWing Airlines room first: partly because the set design looked epic in the photos, and partly because we felt we deserved a tropical getaway after so many escape rooms. A great venue nestled away in Crowborough and the hosts were perfectly pleasant in asking about our prior experience when we arrived.
Theming
After a thorough health and safety briefing, our host led us to our flight, where we took our seats in an actual plane fuselage. Our mission was twofold: a) find the Dark Master and b) avoid crashing. The theming was faultless and the cabin even rocked (quite dramatically) during turbulence. Hats off to whoever designed this room. I also appreciated that the clue system was the airplane phone, which felt perfectly on theme. The room used its space effectively, with a brilliantly themed transition between spaces involving suitcases. The room was filled with airplane paraphernalia: socks, an inflight magazine, a life jacket, a snake (all the usual essentials). While the abundance of props added to the immersion, it did make it harder to distinguish what was useful from what was purely decorative.
Puzzling
We were a little slow to take off with the first puzzle and needed a couple of clues to point us in the right direction. There were some genuinely strong individual puzzles, but the overall puzzle flow was occasionally a bit turbulent. Several items collected in the first room were needed in the second, which is a fun way to link spaces but also felt slightly overwhelming at times. We just managed to escape without crashing the plane. Overall, we had a great flight and are keen to book another Dark Master room.
