Broken – Pier Pressure

Hidden beneath the surface lies granddad’s Cold War bunker—forgotten and full of secrets. Separated at the start, you’ll explore different sides of the bunker, communicating through walls, passing items, and uncovering the strange story sealed inside. The space is atmospheric and full of curious surprises.

With its stark dystopian styling, this room is full of surprises so keep your eyes peeled, look closely and save the day.

Hosting

Pier Pressure felt a little understaffed when we visited today, which meant there was a slightly longer wait before our game than we’re used to. And we also missed out on the venue’s usual in-character introduction! Aside from that, the hosting was as enthusiastic as ever. After escaping we had a great chat with the host, discussing the room, sharing a few suggestions. Those post-game debriefs are always one of our favourite parts of visiting Pier Pressure.

Theming

Broken drops you straight into a functional nuclear bunker, and the minimalist set design suits the story perfectly. Rather than relying on elaborate scenery, every object feels like it belongs, creating an environment that is believable without being cluttered. The opening moments are particularly memorable, with the team split between two sections of the bunker and forced to communicate through small openings, creating a sense of urgency. One aspect we were less keen on was the soundtrack. The playlist was brilliantly curated, featuring songs themed around bombs, time running out and impending disaster, but it was mixed a little too loudly for our liking. It certainly added to the tension, although it also made communication between teammates more difficult during the opening section.

Puzzling

This room was refreshingly light on searching and instead focuses on logical, interconnected puzzles that reward observation and teamwork. Everything flowed naturally from one challenge to the next, and we always felt as though we knew what we were trying to achieve. There was perhaps a little too much signposting in places, making some solutions easier than expected, and one puzzle had unfortunately not been reset correctly, allowing us to bypass it by accident. Thankfully this was only a minor hiccup in an otherwise polished experience. Despite being advertised as one of Pier Pressure’s toughest games, we escaped in around 35 minutes, so seasoned enthusiasts may find it more approachable than its reputation suggests.

Broken may not have lived up to its difficulty rating for us, but it remains another polished and thoroughly enjoyable experience from Pier Pressure. Clever puzzle design, strong teamwork mechanics and a believable setting make it an easy room to recommend. If you’re looking for a game that exercises your brain more than your torchlight, this one definitely won’t bomb.
