Our second Clue Cracker game was Mega Bite, and our host Georgia told us beforehand that she was particularly excited for us to experience this one. She remained enthusiastic, friendly and infectiously excited about the rooms, and by this point we were beginning to realise that we had stumbled across somewhere rather special.
Theming
Mega Bite begins in a small, old-fashioned arcade, which initially feels relatively conventional. Then you start playing Mega Bite! Without spoiling how it happens, you suddenly find yourselves inside the video game, and the transformation is fantastic. Everyday environments are recreated using hard lines, altered perspective and a comic-book style that genuinely makes the world feel digital. The attention to detail is superb and the environment is immediately immersive. Our only grumble was that we wanted another room to explore!
Puzzling
Mega Bite is considerably more linear than Temple Quest, but for a team of two this worked extremely well. We moved naturally from puzzle to puzzle, with excellent signposting and some clever variations on ideas we hadn’t encountered before. The technology and release hatches were particularly satisfying and obvious. Our only real issue involved colour. Under some of the unusual lighting, we occasionally struggled to distinguish between colours required for puzzles, which could also create an accessibility problem for some players. It was a rare instance where the fantastic visual style slightly conflicted with the practical gameplay. The room builds towards an energetic finale involving fighting off the bad guys and we tumbled out after about 35 minutes, laughing and full of adrenaline, mostly wishing there had been another 25 minutes to play.
Mega Bite takes a brilliant central idea and executes it exceptionally well, combining an immaculate video-game world with inventive puzzles and fantastic flow. Thankfully, when the zombies came looking for brains, we had just enough to beat them at their own game!
